I have often been quoted as saying that "as I age, I want to protect my M and Ms". I’m not talking about chocolate here I’m talking about how important it is to do everything we can to protect both our mind and our movement. If we can keep both of these intact throughout the 80s and 90s and beyond, then we can live fulfilling lives until our very last days.
Sadly, my mother has extremely debilitating Alzheimer’s, according to the NHS she’s not alone. Their research reveals a startling statistic: more than 944,000 individuals in the UK are living with dementia, and it's projected that one in two of us will be impacted by dementia during our lifetimes. In light of these sobering numbers, it's crucial to adopt proactive measures to safeguard our cognitive well-being.
First and foremost, the importance of preventing brain injuries cannot be overstated. Dr. Annette Bosworth, a distinguished brain specialist featured in my recent podcast series, highlights that many people unwittingly suffer physical brain injuries, emphasizing the need for vigilance in avoiding such incidents.
In addition to safeguarding against injuries, there are several other strategies to promote brain health:
However, it's crucial to recognise that nootropics are most effective when complemented by a nutritious diet and a healthy lifestyle. By integrating the right nootropics into your daily routine, you can provide essential support to your brain, enhancing its performance and resilience.
Vitamin B Complex: Vitamin B12, B9, and B6 are recognised as nootropics that facilitate healthy blood flow to the brain. These vitamins play a pivotal role in brain health, aiding in neurotransmitter production and reducing homocysteine levels linked to cognitive decline. The research underscores the cognitive benefits of maintaining optimal B vitamin levels, even in individuals without deficiencies.
We have two approaches here, firstly we offer a very powerful Vitamin B Complex. Secondly, our MyVIT personalised multivitamin, multimineral and plant extracts, not only feature all of the necessary b vitamins for a healthy brain but also contain lots of plant extracts that have throughout ancient history, been associated with enhanced cognition.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Omega-3s are fundamental for lifelong brain health, influencing cognitive development, learning, and memory. Brain cells with abundant omega-3 in their membranes are more adept at intercellular communication, a critical process for brain function. Numerous studies, including a comprehensive analysis of 14 independent trials, suggest that omega-3 supplements may be instrumental in preventing or treating cognitive decline in older adults.
In fact, the resounding endorsement of omega-3 by experts in my podcasts has made it a staple in my daily supplement regimen. It's clear that nurturing your brain with the right nutrients and lifestyle choices can significantly impact your cognitive well-being and contribute to a vibrant, focused, and mentally agile future.
Noggin: We created our very own new tropics drink noggin, out of frustration that so many other supplements in this area included heaps of sugar and often, when they did feature caffeine, it was synthetic.
This natural energy drink has been carefully formulated to provide the benefits of vitamins and minerals such as Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5), Vitamin B6 and Iron. Noggin is flavoured with natural apple, meaning it tastes great, too. Forget those energy drinks that are laced with hidden sugars and artificial caffeine: Noggin delivers clean energy for your mind, reduces tiredness and fatigue, and contributes to normal mental performance and cognitive function.
Natural plant extracts such as L-Theanine, an amino acid found in black and green tea, and Korean Ginseng are full of their own health benefits which boost the efficacy of this natural energy drink.
A few interesting facts to end on:
Scientists used to believe that we did not develop new brain cells as we age, but this is not true. Brain cells can form new connections and pathways, known as neuroplasticity, throughout our lives. Neuroplasticity means that we can adapt to new challenges, recover from injuries, and continually learn and grow, even in our later years.
Positive emotions, such as gratitude and kindness, activate regions of the brain associated with well-being and happiness.
Meditation and mindfulness practices have been shown to change the brain's structure and function, leading to improved focus, reduced stress, and enhanced well-being.
Regular exercise stimulates the release of neurochemicals like endorphins and BDNF, which can improve mood, cognition, and overall brain health.
